Brother Tamil Movie Review: A Completely Messed-Up Family Drama
Brother Tamil Family Drama Movie Review Completely Messed Up Family Drama Brother is a Tamil family drama film directed by M. Rajesh. Starring Jayam Ravi, Priyanka Mohan, and Bhoomika, the movie features Harris Jayaraj's music composition. It tries to bring a sense of family values through comedy but fails to achieve that with a well-thought-out storyline.
A story unfolds based on an ultraorthodox, very stiff social attitude Jayam Ravi often involves himself in many hassles due to his principles at extreme ends. Wary of his nature, sister Bhoomika takes him to her in-laws in Ooty so that she is hoping for some atmosphere around to loosen up a few rigors that govern the ways of his living style. The real strength behind the cruxes emerging in this story turn out to be family situations and conflicts.
Script writing and Direction
The film begins on the usual lines of Rajesh, introducing characters and backstories through voiceover. However, the narrative soon turns into the predictability trap of borrowing from familiar tropes. This being no comedy, the humorous tracks fail to carry the fare. The family drama remains shallow without any critical conflict over self-respect introduced in the interval without so much buildup or payoff. The flashback of the second half on the background of Jayam Ravi is of little value to the scenes. It feels like a forced and disengaged act. Even the behavioral change after flashback by Jayam Ravi doesn't go well with the basic ideology of the character. The screenplay is too draggy, full of repeat scenes, and the characters are not engaging enough. Even the title "Brother" is exaggerated at places, as if all characters, be it the servant, doctor, or even the future father-in-law, call him as "Brother". While the twist climax does give one a hint of Rajesh's trademark, the film, sadly does not play to his strength.
Performances:
Jayam Ravi impresses in a couple of emotional scenes in the latter half, but Priyanka Mohan is too less. VTV Ganesh's comedy does not land well, and certain comedies slow down the narrative. Bhoomika and her in-laws get some screen space but not for any good characterization. Sathish is highly stereotypical and nothing beyond what he did in Beast; he doesn't serve anything to the story at all.
Technical Department:
Stunts: Not needed in this movie.
Score: The background score from Justin Prabhakaran and the songs are too nice.
The music specially "Makkamishi" has great rhythm going but the background lifts that again and again which sounds weird. Not much is done over Ootty's visual aptness as it has lots of handheld work at many places. Cutting here also not easy, as talented cutting cannot cover up weak content. It can't also be said that sound mixing is evenly done at many times; dialogues as well as effects clash up with the songs.
Verdict
Brother is both a family drama and a comedy gone awry. The jokes fall flat, and when they get serious, scenes take an unintentional comedy path. With no strength in its writing or directing, there's little left in Brother to redeem the piece.
